Restorative Roots: A Mission of Care Born in the Kitchen

Discover how Restorative Roots blends traditional nourishment with thoughtfully prepared meals to support mothers during postpartum recovery.

Supporting postpartum healing with nourishing meals and intentional care

The idea for Restorative Roots began in a place many small businesses begin: the kitchen. During her second postpartum experience, founder Holly Stein prepared 60 nourishing meals for herself using principles from Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and traditional healing practices. What began as a way to support her own recovery soon evolved into something more.

When Holly shared those meals with friends—and then friends of friends—they responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. Their feedback revealed a deeper need: helping mothers rest, heal, and receive care during postpartum. From that realization came a simple guiding question that still shapes the company today.

That question is one Holly and her team return to often when making decisions—from ingredients and packaging to how the brand shows up online. The same philosophy also shaped the name “Restorative Roots.” While the company first launched as Mama Meals, the new name reflects a broader vision: restoring the body, honoring traditional nourishment practices, and reconnecting with the ways women have long been cared for after birth.

Building a mission-driven business

As Restorative Roots began to grow, so did the community around it. What started as meals shared between friends quickly attracted people who felt deeply connected to the purpose behind the work. Team members joined through friendships, referrals, and even from within the customer community itself.

That shared belief in supporting mothers through nourishment and care has shaped the culture of Restorative Roots, creating a team that works closely together and feels personally invested in the company’s impact.

For Holly, building Restorative Roots has been both rewarding and full of surprises. One of the most unexpected parts has been seeing how powerful it can be when people feel aligned with a shared purpose. That sense of connection has helped the team expand organically while staying focused on supporting mothers.

For other small business owners just starting to build their team and company, Holly offers simple advice: Start before you feel ready and let it be imperfect. Sometimes the best ideas simply begin with a willingness to take the first step.

Designing a brand that feels like care

Restorative Roots approaches branding the same way it approaches food: with intention and care. From the beginning, Holly wanted every part of the customer experience—from the website to the packaging—to reflect warmth, softness, and nourishment. Inspired by natural materials, femininity, and the slower rhythms of postpartum life, the visual identity feels both premium and comforting.

That philosophy extends to the moment customers receive their meals. She hopes the experience feels personal, almost as if the food was prepared specifically for them. Every detail—from colors and textures to labeling and presentation—helps reinforce that feeling of care and support.

“So many mothers go through postpartum feeling invisible. I want our packaging to say: ‘You deserve this.’”

Of course, thoughtful design also has to work in the real world. Because Restorative Roots ships frozen meals nationwide, packaging must be durable enough to withstand freezing, shipping, and defrosting while still maintaining a premium feel. Finding that balance between practicality and aesthetics has been an important part of refining the brand as it continues to evolve.

Flexible labeling for a growing business

As Restorative Roots evolved, maintaining that same thoughtful customer experience became increasingly important. Every detail—from the nourishing meals themselves to the packaging that delivers them—is designed to reflect care. Along the way, finding labeling solutions that matched both aesthetic and practical needs became a key part of the process.

That’s where Avery labels became a practical solution for the team. With the ability to print smaller batches and make quick updates using the Avery Design & Print Online tool, Restorative Roots can keep its packaging polished while adapting as the business develops. Instead of committing to large print runs, the team can make adjustments quickly—whether they’re updating product details, refining their packaging, or introducing new offerings.

For Holly, that flexibility has been especially helpful as the business continues to grow. “I love that we can make label changes quickly and only print a small batch of labels,” she says. “It allows us to keep our packaging looking polished and cohesive without needing a huge production run or a large design team.”

Looking ahead: Supporting mothers through every season

The impact of Restorative Roots is often felt in the messages the team receives from customers. Many describe the meals as “life-changing,” sharing how meaningful it was to have nourishing food ready during a time when caring for themselves can feel nearly impossible. For Holly, those stories are the most rewarding part of the journey. If a meal helps a new mother feel even a little more supported during the blur of early postpartum life, she believes the business has done exactly what it set out to do.

That mission continues to guide what comes next. The team is currently preparing to launch a sister brand called The Milk Market. It will feature premium lactation treat mixes like brownies, cookies, pancakes, and muffins designed to support breast milk production. Like Restorative Roots, the new brand is rooted in nourishment and care for mothers during the early stages of motherhood.

What started in a single postpartum kitchen is still guided by the same intention today. Holly hopes Restorative Roots will continue to grow in a way that supports women through every season of motherhood—from preconception and pregnancy to postpartum and the years that follow.
