The Minc Foil Applicator is an example of an equipment that allows the transfer of foil to pre-printed items. In the industry, this process is known as "sleeking" and works as follows:
- Print desired image on a dry toner device – either desktop laser (usually printed in black) or similar higher end production devices (ex: office copier).
- Using heat (example – the Minc Applicator), apply the foil to the printed sheet (paper, cardstock labels, etc.). The foil has an adhesive that bonds to just the toner.
- Peel foil film from the sheet. Whatever color layer is on the foil will transfer just to the printed areas of the pre-printed sheet.
These type of devices allow the decoration of printed items, even for at home printing.
We at Avery do not test our label materials with Minc foil applicators. This process is dependent on the dry toner of the laser printer, so the best approach is to test with your specific printer to verify the end result.
We do not know if the coatings on our clear labels will interfere with the process or cause foil transfer outside the desired print area. You may want to consider testing both our matte clear and glossy clear material options. At this time, we have no plans to conduct this type of testing.
