Some inkjet Avery labels, such as our GHS and Waterproof Durable White Film labels, are only compatible with pigment-based inkjet printers. The pigment-based ink is what allows these labels to be waterproof and water-resistant.
A pigment-based ink is more durable than dye-based ink because it resists fading for longer and doesn't smudge as much when drying. Pigment-based ink also has good long term durability in the form of water-fastness and UV resistance. In addition, it works great for creating more detailed prints for artwork.
Dye inks, on the other hand, print colors with more vibrancy and saturation compared to pigment-based inks. These dye inks will not have the same fade resistance and in some cases can begin to fade quite rapidly. Dye based ink will work great for printing photos or images on cards.
It should be noted, if you plan to use color when printing your design on a waterproof or water-resistant label, make sure that the printer is compatible with color pigment cartridges. Some inkjet printers will have black pigment ink and dye-based color ink.
If you are unsure whether your printer uses dye or pigment ink, you can look at the specifications for your printer make and model on your printer manufacturer's website.
