(Asking for a friend)

In 2014, I started a side hustle selling handmade cosplay accessories. I had a name, a logo, a color I loved, and just enough self-taught Photoshop skills to be dangerous. So when I signed up for my first event, naturally, I needed business cards. I think I made every business card mistake one could possibly make—and it showed.

I designed them myself with a hand-drawn logo and a deep teal background that looked great on my computer screen. Then I ordered 2,000. They were terrible. The teal was so dark it was almost black. That hand drawn logo I had scanned into Photoshop? It looked blurry and grainy. And after trying both my home printer and a local print shop, it became pretty clear that this wasn’t just a printer problem. My design had problems.

The fallout (spoiler: there were tears)

At the time, this was devastating. I was working a minimum-wage job and already spending money on products, booth supplies, and event fees. Two thousand unusable business cards weren’t a funny little learning experience. Tears were inevitable. And because I didn’t have time to redesign and reorder them before my first event, I showed up without business cards at all.

More than a decade later, I still use the logo, colors, and much of the visual identity I created while figuring out what went wrong with those cards. That first print disaster taught me how to make design choices that could work on everything from a tiny sticker to a retractable booth banner—and grow with my business along the way.

If I could go back and give 2014 me one piece of advice, it would be much simpler: Print one before you order 2,000. That was the unlock that turned my business card mistakes into lessons that made my future brand identity and printed materials so much better.

Design on screen, decide in print

Just because a design looks good on screen doesn’t mean it will look right in person. So before I commit time and money to having something made, I try to find the easiest, least expensive way to test it in the real world first. That might mean printing a sticker or T-shirt design on plain paper roughly the size of the final print.

You don’t even have to recreate the whole finished product to learn something useful. For example, I can’t exactly print a roughly 3′ × 6′ retractable banner at home before ordering one for my booth. But I can print my logo as large as it will fit on an 8½” × 11″ sheet of paper.

If the logo on my finished banner will be that size or smaller, I’ve already tested that part of the design before spending more than $100 on the real thing. From there, I can use the printer’s previews and proofing steps to check the rest. A test doesn’t have to recreate the final product to save you time, money, waste, and a whole lot of frustration.

How should you proof a business card before printing?

Before ordering business cards in bulk, print a small test batch so you can check the finished size, readability, image quality, and color in person. You can print one sheet of business cards yourself or order the smallest available quantity from a printing service.

For me, the easiest and most affordable option was a small pack of printable Avery business cards. I could print one sheet, see what needed to change, update my design, and print another. Using a few sheets to get it right was a pretty small tradeoff compared to ordering another 2,000 cards I couldn’t use.

Make sure your logo can go where your business goes

My first logo was a hand-drawn image that I scanned and tried to turn into a logo in Photoshop. At the time, I didn’t know much about image resolution or designing artwork for different sizes. The business cards made that painfully obvious. If my logo was already blurry on something that small, what was going to happen when I put it on a T-shirt or blew it up on a booth banner?

When I redesigned my logo, I created a much simpler geometric owl in a large 12″ × 12″ file at 360 PPI (pixels per inch). PPI is basically a measure of how much image detail is packed into each inch, and 300 PPI at the final size is a common standard for high-quality printing. Starting with a large, high-resolution file gave me plenty to work with when I needed my logo at smaller sizes. I also made sure it worked in black or white and on light or dark backgrounds. More than a decade later, I’m still using it.

Choose brand colors for the real world, not just your screen

Dark teal was always going to be part of my brand. The problem was that the deep teal I loved on screen printed so dark it was almost black. Learning about RGB and CMYK helped me understand why colors on a screen don’t always look the same in print, but I still needed to figure out which teal would actually give me the look I wanted.

My solution was very low-tech: I made a sheet with several versions of the color, each one a little lighter than the last, and printed it on plain white cardstock. Once I found the teal that looked right in print, I used that color to start building the rest of my palette. I did the same thing with other colors before locking them in.

It’s an easy test you can do with any brand palette: print your color swatches together on a simple sheet of cardstock and make sure you like the physical result as much as the one on your screen.

That eventually gave me a palette with my dark teal, a much lighter aqua, pastel pink, and lavender. Over time, that lighter aqua actually became one of the colors I use most often on printed pieces because it reproduces more reliably. The dark teal never disappeared—I just learned where it worked best.

Why do business card colors look different when printed?

Business card colors can look different in print because screens display color differently than printed ink. Screens use RGB (red, green, and blue) light, while most types of printers use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) inks or toners. The material and finish you choose can also affect how those colors look on the finished card.

For a standard white cardstock, printing your own color test can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. But once you start experimenting with different materials and finishes, it’s worth testing those too.

A glossy finish can make colors appear more vibrant. That might be great for some designs but more intense than you wanted for a soft pastel palette. Print those same colors on brown kraft paper, and the color of the material itself can change how they appear. Pearlized and metallic materials can change the finished look again.

Even after years of designing my own marketing materials, I still don’t assume a color that worked on one material will look exactly the same on another. If you’re trying a new business card material or finish, print a test sheet yourself when you can or order the smallest available quantity before committing to a larger order.

Design for how you’re actually going to print

Remember how I mentioned that deep teal background on my first card? It also went all the way to the edge. I could print it at home, but covering every card in that much dark, saturated color used a ton of ink, and getting consistent color wasn’t easy.

That taught me to think about how I planned to print something while I was designing it. For marketing materials I might print myself, I started using more white and lighter backgrounds. For professionally printed pieces, I had more flexibility to use large areas of dark teal, like I eventually did on my booth banner.

The lesson isn’t “never use dark colors.” It’s knowing how you’re going to make something while you’re designing it.

Build a system, not a single good business card

Once I worked through those early problems, something kind of great happened: designing everything else got easier. I wasn’t starting from scratch every time. I had a logo that worked at different sizes, colors I’d already tested in print, and eventually a small set of fonts I could use consistently.

Typography was another thing I learned as I went. A seminar I attended for work introduced me to basics like serif versus sans serif fonts, limiting how many fonts you use, and choosing fonts that work well together. Roboto Condensed became one of my go-tos around that time, and I’ve been using it ever since.

Those reusable decisions carried me from business cards to postcards, tags, tent cards, and other marketing materials. They even carried me through packaging, booth signage, and social graphics. I didn’t have to reinvent my brand every time I needed something new. I had a set of choices I knew worked because I’d already learned—sometimes the hard way—which ones didn’t. Those business card mistakes became the test that everything else benefited from.

If you’re starting from scratch, creating a brand style guide before you start investing in marketing materials in bulk. Making those choices first can save you from figuring them out one project at a time like I did.

Give your brand room to grow

One thing I actually got right from the beginning was the name JoJo’s So Creative. People had been telling me, “You’re so creative,” for as long as I could remember. I realized that that idea could follow me no matter what I decided to make. My hand-drawn top hat logo and the word “millinery”? Not so much. They made perfect sense when I thought I was going to make hats. The geometric owl I replaced it with didn’t tell people what I sold. It was simply recognizable and personal to me. So it still worked as I moved from hats and cosplay commissions to the fantasy and floral accessories I make today.

I think about branding a little like organizing. If you pack a drawer or storage bin so tightly that there’s no room for anything new, the system stops working the second something changes. Your brand needs a little empty space too. You don’t have to predict what your business will look like ten years from now. You just don’t want your branding to prevent it from getting there.

What are the biggest business card mistakes to avoid?

The biggest business card mistakes to avoid start with trusting what you see on screen without testing a physical print. Low-resolution artwork can look blurry or pixelated, while colors may not look the way you expected once printed. It’s also important to design with your printing method in mind and proof the finished design before ordering a large quantity.

If you’re just getting started, here’s my short list:

Test your design in print, not just on screen.

Start with high-resolution artwork that can work at the sizes you need.

Print your brand colors before locking them in.

Design with your printing method in mind.

Proof one before you order hundreds—or 2,000.

One bad print run, ten years of better decisions

Those 2,000 business cards felt like a disaster in 2014. I went to some of my first big selling events without them and had to improvise. Sometimes that meant typing my Instagram handle into someone’s phone. Other times, I held up a little sign with @JoJoSoCreative when people took photos so they’d have a way to find me later.

Looking back, though, I never had another print disaster like it. I didn’t become a graphic designer or suddenly learn everything there was to know about printing. I learned to test things, question what I was seeing on my screen. To think about where a design would eventually have to live before I committed time and money to making it.

More than ten years later, I’m still using the logo, colors, and design choices that came out of fixing those first business card mistakes. So if I could go back and give 2014 me one piece of advice, it’s still the same:

Before you make 2,000 of anything, how about we just make one first?

Start by browsing free, customizable business card designs that are meant to be printed to get ideas for what works for different formats.
