I can't understand all the negative reviews. Using the downloadable Windows installer for my Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit machine, it works like a charm. It could be slightly more intuitive; however, it is easy to figure out if you ever used any type of labeling or greeting card software in the past (just two of many I've bought and used are Art Explosion Pro, Hallmark software, etc). Not quite as robust as Art Explosion, of course, but for free software it is quite the deal.

The program does allow me to save my address label projects (have not tried a greeting card yet, but will update once I do). It does allow reopening saved project files with no problem other than having to look at the bottom center of the Open a Saved Project tab screen once the program launches to see the correct link (middle center defaults to your online Avery account - not a deal breaker for me either way, but do prefer local machine storage as I backup regularly via Macrium Reflect free edition and Google drive).

Also, truthfully, the program does take a little longer to save and open a project than it really should, as I am using an AMD FX-6300 MHz processor, which normally blazes through whatever I through at it...this is the first program that has a several second delay when saving and opening, as well as when printing. But for free, can't complain too much.

I was ready to run when I saw the reviews, but past experience (about 8 years ago I think) with Avery software helped take a gamble, and it was well worth the roll of the dice. And did I mention, it is free?

This software is missing features that were available in DesignPro. You can no longer specify where, on the physical page, the printing should start. You can no longer specify to print multiple copies of a given label on the same page. I am currently shopping for an alternative and am open to suggestions. In the meantime, I have to keep one computer on Windows 7 just to print labels.

These templates suck

By Not happy camper

from None of your business

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

It used to be a template was blank and let you cut and paste things into it and otherwise just control it. These templates are complicated and don't give you control--I can't just cut and paste text in, for example, and when I finally got the text in, it had to be in one of a very few, not attractive fonts, not the font I had it in, in Word. Why can't we just have blank-slates that we can do what we want with? Why is there this happy- paper-clip mentality that Big Brother has to pre-empt all our creativity and give us limited and unattractive choices? I'm sorry I wasted my money buying the paper and my time struggling with the template.

The absolute WORST program I have ever tried to use

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

I spent 10 hrs. downloading and creating a sheet of labels to be used as book plates. The software was terrible, often freezing or not responding to commands. With great patience, I persevered and had a sheet of 10 nice labels, all different and creative. I tried to save the project both to my computer AND to my online account with no success. I tried to save for about 45 min. and then decided that I had given this piece of junk enough of my time. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am with this download. You should be ashamed to put your company's name on a product so defective.

First Impressions of Design & Print

By Mark

from Houston, Texas

  • Simple To Use

  • Maybe A Bit Too Simple
  • Missing Features

Best Uses

  • Almost Any Form

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

I am giving this only two stars because of the following reasons: 1)Too much white space. The program has so much white space - features had to be left off. Features are what we need - not white space. 2)No database capabilities. Unlike in previous programs - you can not create a database of items to be included into the form. 3)Although the program could be used by anyone with an IQ over one(1) - people who have normal or high IQs look to use something that is oriented to make a business person's life easier.

The good things about the program is that Avery finally addressed the outstanding issues earlier programs had. What is shocking everyone is the radical change to the interface and the loss of capabilities the former program had. Gimmicks (such as the accordian menu on the left) do not impress those who need professional tools. These gimmicks are only good for those who never knew just how great the older programs were.

To tell the truth - I originally sent out to our company that maybe we should be using Design Pro. After looking at Design & Print though - I must withdraw my suggestion because it would just make our lives worse rather than better. I say that because it would take us a lot longer to input all of our customers into the program whereas I had already put many of them in to the Design Pro program I have (and use) at home.

      Intuitive Software, Easy Production

          My equipment: Sony notebook 64bit w/Win 7,
          HP Officejet Pro 8600
          Download and installation: No problems.
Utilization: First time I ever used this type of software. Immediately set to create a return address label from a template for label type 8167.
Added text, modified color, manipulated icon size and color. Very few problems on an intuitive level and printed the labels just fine. Only real issue was it took over two minutes for the job to finish spooling and finally print. I've had no problem like this with any other program but patience won out with a successful first job completed. Looking forward to testing other uses.
