I can't understand all the negative reviews. Using the downloadable Windows installer for my Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit machine, it works like a charm. It could be slightly more intuitive; however, it is easy to figure out if you ever used any type of labeling or greeting card software in the past (just two of many I've bought and used are Art Explosion Pro, Hallmark software, etc). Not quite as robust as Art Explosion, of course, but for free software it is quite the deal.

The program does allow me to save my address label projects (have not tried a greeting card yet, but will update once I do). It does allow reopening saved project files with no problem other than having to look at the bottom center of the Open a Saved Project tab screen once the program launches to see the correct link (middle center defaults to your online Avery account - not a deal breaker for me either way, but do prefer local machine storage as I backup regularly via Macrium Reflect free edition and Google drive).

Also, truthfully, the program does take a little longer to save and open a project than it really should, as I am using an AMD FX-6300 MHz processor, which normally blazes through whatever I through at it...this is the first program that has a several second delay when saving and opening, as well as when printing. But for free, can't complain too much.

I was ready to run when I saw the reviews, but past experience (about 8 years ago I think) with Avery software helped take a gamble, and it was well worth the roll of the dice. And did I mention, it is free?

Terrible software

First of all I resent having to create an account on Avery's web site just to write a review, as if I don't have enough web account logins already!

My review...Read complete review

First of all I resent having to create an account on Avery's web site just to write a review, as if I don't have enough web account logins already!

My review concerns the "Design & Print" software for Mac. It's clunky to install with a very Windows like interface where I had to go through several screens needlessly clicking the next buttons. Messy & unnecessary.

Once I got the software up and running, I found it a lot of effort just to create the one label I needed. But I persevered. When finally done, I pressed Print. Nothing happened. The printer queue didn't open, the printer sat idly doing nothing, and no error message or anything from the "Design & Print" software. Finally I saved to PDF and printed but the label came out all wrong, crossing over labels. "Design & Print" warned me to check my Preview settings before printing, but come on, all this just for ONE label?? And I have to do this all over again next time I want to print a label? Is there really no better way to do this?

I have just one set of Avery labels so couldn't Avery simply produce a Word template for my labels? Of course I could have created a template using Word's mail merge utility, but again all this hassle just for ONE label? This is not an efficient work flow.

In the end I resorted to using a pen to write out my label, that's how good "Design & Print" is.

What happened!

By BA

from NC

Pros

  • Easy To Navigate

Cons

  • Not Very Powerful

Best Uses

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

My Windows 7 computer "blue screened" and was replaced with a Windows 8. Because of the switch, I now have to use Design & Print as opposed to the much better Design Pro. What happened to many of the useful features of the former software? I really miss easily centering text in the box both horizontally and vertically even if the text box size has changed, designating where printing should begin on a sheet, and simple saving to a working file on computer without having to go through multiple steps every single time. Design & Print has an easy to use and much jazzier format so if the missing features could be put back in, Avery could once again offer great design software to accompany their products

    Need better instruction

    By Karen

    from Albany NY

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

I cannot customize the labels. They are in the upper left corner and does not respond to alignment. The help link did not respond. I know I am doing something very wrong but finally printed them as it because I needed them for a mailing but very disappointed in results.
Please improve step by step instructions.
Also, please add: volunteer organization to Job Role selection list.

I wanted to mail merge from an Excel Spreadsheet which was fairly small and I got an error that my Excel file was too large for the software mail merge! I also wanted to color the entire name badge with a light background color and I could not find any feature to do this.

DESIGN PRO 5 WAS GREAT. THIS SUCKS. LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE BY MICROSOFT. AVERY MANAGEMENT SHOULD READ THE REVIEWS. PERHAPS THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS. I'LL NEVER USE AN AVERY PRODUCT AGAIN.
