I can't understand all the negative reviews. Using the downloadable Windows installer for my Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit machine, it works like a charm. It could be slightly more intuitive; however, it is easy to figure out if you ever used any type of labeling or greeting card software in the past (just two of many I've bought and used are Art Explosion Pro, Hallmark software, etc). Not quite as robust as Art Explosion, of course, but for free software it is quite the deal.

The program does allow me to save my address label projects (have not tried a greeting card yet, but will update once I do). It does allow reopening saved project files with no problem other than having to look at the bottom center of the Open a Saved Project tab screen once the program launches to see the correct link (middle center defaults to your online Avery account - not a deal breaker for me either way, but do prefer local machine storage as I backup regularly via Macrium Reflect free edition and Google drive).

Also, truthfully, the program does take a little longer to save and open a project than it really should, as I am using an AMD FX-6300 MHz processor, which normally blazes through whatever I through at it...this is the first program that has a several second delay when saving and opening, as well as when printing. But for free, can't complain too much.

I was ready to run when I saw the reviews, but past experience (about 8 years ago I think) with Avery software helped take a gamble, and it was well worth the roll of the dice. And did I mention, it is free?

This software is missing features that were available in DesignPro. You can no longer specify where, on the physical page, the printing should start. You can no longer specify to print multiple copies of a given label on the same page. I am currently shopping for an alternative and am open to suggestions. In the meantime, I have to keep one computer on Windows 7 just to print labels.

Design & Print is still BETA

By Garry P

from Wisconsin

Pros

  • Questionable

Cons

  • Needs Work To Be Useful

Best Uses

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

Please bring back DesignPro until you have worked out the bugs in Design & Print.
I'm trying to print business cards by modifying one previously created in DesignPro. everything looked fine until I tried to print it. It prints the 2 inch dimension of the card, 1.9 inches with 3/4 inch borders at the top and bottom of the page instead of 2 inches with 1/2 inch borders top and bottom. I then discovered that I was not using the correct template for the Avery business cards that I was using. So I tried "Apply design to another product" shown on the print page. It copied the front of the card to the new template, but not the back. After redoing the back, I printed a sample and had the same result as before. So now I have to start over.

I used Design Pro 5.4 for CD and DVD labels, and it worked flawlessly, and fast, on my Win 7 machine. Itha machine died and now I have Dell Win 8.1 machine, and this new version does not even load...all I get is a white screen! I do lots of labels, and now, I can't use even ne of them! Avery is the new Microsoft!

It looks good when I am working in Design & Print! But when I print, the letters Åå, Ää, Öö looks like CRA P! Anyone have an idea on how I can solve it?

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

I loved the Avery Deluxe version I downloaded from disk. Labels were easy to create and printed just like they looked in print preview.
            This online version is terrible!
I set up my label(s) and all looks good but when I go to print, it looks nothing like the preview.
So I tried to contact avery via the chat icon and it said "your chat session has ended" Before it even started. What?! I generally don't write bad reviews but I've wasted so much time on this what's another five minutes.
Please don't ask me if I've tried this or that. I want a software that's easy to use (like the old version of avery).
I have no issues using a new software if it works. I have a bachelors and masters degree and am not afraid of new and better software. Problem is, this is new terrible software.

            What happened!

            By BA

            from NC

            Pros

            • Easy To Navigate

            Cons

            • Not Very Powerful

            Best Uses

This review is from Avery Design & Print:

My Windows 7 computer "blue screened" and was replaced with a Windows 8. Because of the switch, I now have to use Design & Print as opposed to the much better Design Pro. What happened to many of the useful features of the former software? I really miss easily centering text in the box both horizontally and vertically even if the text box size has changed, designating where printing should begin on a sheet, and simple saving to a working file on computer without having to go through multiple steps every single time. Design & Print has an easy to use and much jazzier format so if the missing features could be put back in, Avery could once again offer great design software to accompany their products
