The Basics of Good Design
Knowing the essentials of good design can turn any good project into a great one. Understanding how design works doesn’t have to be difficult. Even the most sophisticated designs can be broken down into four basic elements: color scheme, graphics, font, and layout. Here are some key principles to keep in mind for each of these elements:

- Color scheme
Limit your color scheme to one or two colors. This will keep the design simple and attractive to the eye.

- Graphics
A single, clean, bold graphic element (such as a logo, border, illustration, or scanned photo) can really call attention to your message.

- Font
When choosing a font, think of it as a visual expression of your tone of voice. And don't be shy about increasing the point size.

- Layout
This refers to the way the elements are placed on a page. You might want to break up large blocks of text with color or graphics to keep things interesting. Always remember to leave a reasonable margin of space around the text for readability.

Once you get these basic guidelines under your belt, you can apply your design knowledge to any format:

Posters and Signs

Select a large font that will be easy to read from a distance. Pare down the text to just a few lines or less. Choose a color that contrasts well against the background (bright red, dark green, or navy stand out well against a white background).

Brochures or Postcards

If you’re preparing a piece that has a lot of information that needs to fit onto a small space, eliminate the clutter and enhance your text with just one or two well-chosen graphical elements. Keeping the design simple makes it easier for the reader to find the important details.

Business Cards

Even when designing something that has very limited space, you can introduce color and graphics to make your message pop.
Avery Magnetic Business Cards with pre-cut sheets come in handy for custom made business cards, and a whole bunch of other uses, too. Create colorful reminders, post deadlines, display frequently dialed extensions or emergency phone numbers, or even display your company mission statement, personal goals, or daily affirmations.

One final tip: Whether or not you're a natural-born artist, clip art can be a real timesaver when it comes to designing almost any project. And with a little time and practice, you’ll soon find new ways to create good design of your own!
